Inspired by a disheartening encounter with a sea of discarded plastic in the idyllic setting of Bali, Ukrainian biochemistry graduate Julia Bialetska and her partner Eugene Tomilin decided to take a stand against the rising tide of disposable plastic waste. Leveraging their expertise and partnership with the M.G. Kholodny Institute of Botany in Kiev, the dynamic duo embarked on an exciting journey that would lead to an extraordinary innovation.

Through their meticulous research, they harnessed the power of mycelium, the vegetative part of fungi, and waste hemp fibers to create an organic, eco-friendly alternative to expanded polystyrene, a material notorious for its long decomposition period. Their company, S.Lab, has found a way to tackle the world’s plastic problem one mushroom at a time.

S.Lab’s innovative material, which is fully biodegradable and waterproof, has already demonstrated its efficacy in a successful pilot project for L’Oréal and has piqued the interest of tech giants like Samsung and Sony. Its quick decomposition time – just 30 days – and its fireproof properties are some of the standout features, setting it apart from other environmentally-friendly alternatives. But S.Lab’s journey to this point has not been a walk in the park.

Just as their startup was gaining traction in their home country, war broke out in Ukraine, forcing them to leave their project and homeland behind. But despite the hurdles, they managed to transport their equipment to Spain, where they have been working tirelessly to continue their mission of replacing polystyrene with their novel product.

Their resilience, innovation, and commitment to environmental sustainability recently earned them a €25,000 (£21,748) prize from the Green Alley Award, a competition focused on encouraging circular economy initiatives. The prize money, as well as the introductions to potential clients and mentors that come with it, has provided the pair with a much-needed boost.

The judges at the Green Alley Award were particularly impressed with S.Lab’s dual approach to creating a product that not only matches the performance of polystyrene but also vastly surpasses its environmental footprint. They were equally inspired by S.Lab’s determination to keep pushing forward despite the turmoil back home.

In addition to being eco-friendly and high-performing, S.Lab’s material also champions water conservation. A stark contrast to the 43 liters of water needed to produce a single expanded polystyrene container, S.Lab’s process only requires under two liters per kilogram of material produced.

As EU regulations continue to evolve towards fully recyclable packaging by 2030, S.Lab foresees a future filled with opportunities. The team remains optimistic that with increasing recognition and support, they will be able to reduce costs and compete with traditional polystyrene production. Their dream? To take their business back to their homeland and contribute to Ukraine’s economy.
